Golden Text
“Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7, BSB) · Read in the Bible
Heavenly Father created Adam and Eve and formed the first family. The truth of this lesson is simple and full of love: the family is a gift from God — and the Lord gave one as a gift to each baby.
In the Nursery, we do not teach with many words — we teach with a loving lap, with affection, with repetition, and with colorful pictures. And the truth of the first lesson of this quarter is one of the sweetest there is: Father God made the family. Every baby who comes into your little classroom is the fruit of the love of God, who prepared a daddy and a mommy to take care of them.
This lesson opens a quarter on creation — the beautiful things that Father God made. And we begin with the family, because it is the first "world" that the baby knows. Teaching this from an early age plants a seed in their little heart that will grow their whole life long: I am loved, and God takes care of me.
The Story: Father God Made the Family
Way back at the very beginning of everything, Father God created a very beautiful place, the Garden of Eden, and there He placed the first man: Adam. Adam had everything he needed, but he was alone — and nobody likes to be alone, right? So Father God said that it was not good for the man to stay alone.
That was when God made another very special person: Eve. Now Adam had company, someone to love. And, in time, Father God gave them a baby — named Cain. Thus the first family in the world was born: daddy, mommy, and child. A family given as a gift, made by the loving hands of God.
And the most beautiful part is this: the same Father God who made the family of Adam and Eve also gave a family as a gift to every baby in your classroom.
❤ For the child's heart. You are loved! Father God prepared a family just for you — a daddy, a mommy, people who take care of you with affection. The family is a gift from God, and you are very, very special to Him.
Christ in the Lesson
The family was Father God's idea from the beginning — He is the author of the love that unites people. And there is an even bigger family to which every baby is invited to belong: the family of God. Through Jesus, each one of us can be a beloved child of the Father (John 1:12). When we teach a baby that "Father God Made the Family," we are planting the first idea of a God who is Father — good, present, and full of love. One day this child will understand that this Father sent His own Son, Jesus, to bring us back home.
Closing Prayer
Father God, thank You for making the family and for giving every baby in this little classroom people who love them and take care of them. Bless every child and every home. May they grow up, from the time they are little babies, knowing that they are loved by You and that they belong to Your great family. In Jesus' name, amen.
Soli Deo Gloria — Scripture governs; everything else, on its knees.
Frequently asked questions about this lesson
What is the central truth of Nursery Lesson 1?+
That Heavenly Father made the family. God created Adam, did not want him to be alone, and formed Eve; then came the children. The lesson teaches babies, in a very simple and affectionate way, that the family is a gift from God for every child. The verse is Genesis 2:7.
How to teach the creation of the family to babies and children ages 1 to 2?+
With lots of affection, large pictures, and repetition. Show the picture of Adam, then of Eve, and say, 'Heavenly Father made daddy and mommy'; show the baby (Cain) and say, 'Heavenly Father gave a family as a gift to you.' Use a cloth children's Bible, sing a song about creation, and finish with a short prayer of gratitude.
What is the biblical basis for the story 'Heavenly Father Made the Family'?+
Genesis 2:7-22. In this passage, God forms the human being, places Adam in the Garden of Eden, observes that the man should not be alone (Genesis 2:18), and creates Eve. Thus the first family is born — showing the care and provision of God, who gives each family what it needs to live.
How can the Nursery teacher apply this lesson in everyday life?+
By reinforcing, with words and affection, that each baby is loved and that their family is a gift from God. Welcome each child warmly (with a hug upon arrival), say their name with affection, and pray giving thanks for their family. The safe and loving environment of the nursery is already, in itself, a teaching about the Heavenly Father's love.
Teacher's Guide
The Nursery is taught in moments. Here is a simple outline for the class:
Welcome. Receive each baby with a hug and joy. A safe and affectionate environment is the first "sermon." Check the safety of the classroom (nothing sharp or pointed within reach).
Praise. Sing a song about creation — for example, "God made the boy and the girl." Music helps the baby feel the joy of the truth.
Verse (Genesis 2:7). With a children's Bible (made of cloth or with thick board pages), hold the baby in your lap and say: "Let's read the Bible, the Word of God." Recite the verse three times, with affection, letting the child touch the little book.
Bible story (Genesis 2:7-22). Use the pictures: show Adam ("say hi to Adam!"), then Eve, then the baby of the family. Repeat: "Father God made the family and gave one as a gift to you."
Playtime. With the babies, hand each one a rattle and say their name: "smile, (name)! Father God created your family." With 1- to 2-year-old children, make a little poster-board heart with "I love my family" written on it for them to take to their parents.
Prayer. In the prayer corner, give thanks: "Thank You, Father God, for creating my family. In Jesus' name, amen."
Snack. Always healthy, giving thanks to Father God for the food (pay attention to dietary restrictions, arranged with the parents).
