Golden Text

“for the LORD disciplines the one He loves, as does a father the son in whom he delights.” (Proverbs 3:12, BSB) · Read in the Bible

The story of Ehud, the left-handed judge whom God raised up to deliver Israel from the Moabites, teaches that the Lord corrects His children because He loves them. This lesson shows children that correction from God and from parents serves to teach us to obey and to turn our hearts back to Him.

Have you ever been corrected by someone who loves you? Maybe Mom said "you can't," or maybe Dad explained why something was wrong. At the time, almost nobody likes being corrected. But today we are going to learn a very important truth: when God corrects us, it is because He loves us.

Today's lesson tells the story of a stubborn people who turned away from God and of a left-handed man whom the Lord chose to deliver them. His name was Ehud. And, in the middle of this story full of courage, we are going to discover why God, like a good father, sometimes needs to correct us — always with love, always for our good.

The story of Ehud and the Moabites

In the time of the judges, the people of Israel lived through a cycle that repeated itself many times. They would forget God and do what was wrong. Then, an enemy people would oppress them. When the suffering grew hard, they would remember the Lord and cry out for help. And God, full of mercy, would raise up a deliverer. That is exactly what happened with the Moabites.

Israel had gone back to doing what was evil in the sight of God. Because of this, the Lord allowed King Eglon of Moab to grow strong and rule over the people. This oppression lasted eighteen long years! Israel even had to pay tribute (a kind of tax) to the king of Moab. Until, tired and worn out, the Israelites cried out to God again. And God heard.

The Lord chose a man named Ehud, the son of Gera, from the tribe of Benjamin. Ehud was left-handed — he used his left hand better. Back then, many people did not value left-handed people, but God does not choose people the way the world chooses. He chooses whomever He wants!

One day, Ehud was sent to bring the tribute payment to King Eglon. Before leaving, he made a sword and hid it on his right side, under his clothes — a place where no one would look for a left-handed man's weapon. After delivering the payment, Ehud sent away the men who had come with him and went back alone to the king, saying that he had a secret message for him.

The king became curious and ordered everyone to leave the room. Only the two of them remained. When the king stood up to listen, Ehud took the hidden sword and struck the king, who died right there. Then Ehud locked the doors and escaped. The palace guards took a long time to realize what had happened, and when they went in, Ehud was already far away. He called together the army of Israel, and the people defeated the Moabites. And the Bible says that the land had peace for eighty years. Once again, God brought victory to His people. You can read all of this in Judges 3:12-30.

What the story teaches

Why did Israel spend eighteen years suffering? Because they disobeyed God. But the most beautiful thing is to understand God's heart in this story. He did not abandon His people. He corrected His people. God allowed Israel to feel the consequences of disobedience so that they would learn the lesson and return to Him.

That is what our verse for today teaches: "for the LORD disciplines the one He loves, as does a father the son in whom he delights." (Proverbs 3:12). God's correction is not punishment from someone who hates. It is care from someone who loves!

Think of it this way: when you do something wrong and your parents correct you, they do not do it to make you sad. They do it because they want you to learn to obey, to respect, and to grow in wisdom. With God it is the same way. Sometimes the Lord allows difficult situations in our lives to teach us something important and draw us closer to His heart.

❤ For the child's heart. When you are corrected — by God, by your parents, or by a teacher — do not get angry or too sad. Stop and ask: "What does God want to teach me through this?" Correction from someone who loves you is a gift. A heart that learns from correction grows strong and wise, and gets closer and closer to God.

Christ in the Lesson

Ehud was a deliverer whom God raised up to save Israel from an enemy. But he delivered the people only for a time — after eighty years, Israel sinned again and needed another deliverer.

God had a much bigger plan. He would send a perfect Deliverer, who would save the people not just from an enemy king, but from the greatest enemy of all: sin. That Deliverer is Jesus! Just as Israel cried out to God in their distress, today any child can cry out to Jesus, and He truly saves, forever.

And there is more: God's correction itself points to the love of Jesus. The Lord corrects us because He loves us so much that He does not let us keep going down the wrong path — the same love that led Jesus to the cross to save us. God's correction always comes from a heart that loves us.

Closing Prayer

Dear God, thank You because You love us so much that You even correct us for our good. Just as a good father teaches his child, You teach us to obey and to walk on the right path. Help every child in this class to have a tender heart that learns from correction and always turns back to You. And thank You, above all, for Jesus, our greatest Deliverer. In His name, amen.

Soli Deo Gloria — Scripture governs; everything else, on its knees.

Frequently asked questions about this lesson

What is the Central Point of Lesson 4 for Juniors?+

That God uses the circumstances of life to correct His children, because He loves them. The story of Ehud shows Israel being oppressed by the Moabites because of disobedience, crying out to the Lord, and being delivered. The key verse is "for the LORD disciplines the one He loves, as does a father the son in whom he delights." (Proverbs 3:12).

Who was Ehud in the Bible?+

Ehud was a judge of Israel, the son of Gera, from the tribe of Benjamin. He was left-handed, and God chose him to deliver the people from the oppression of King Eglon of Moab, which lasted eighteen years. The story is in Judges 3:12-30, and after Ehud's victory the land had peace for eighty years.

Why was Israel oppressed by the Moabites?+

Because the people again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, turning away from God. So God allowed the Moabites to rule over them for eighteen years. It was not cruelty from God: it was correction. When the Israelites repented and cried out, the Lord raised up Ehud to deliver them.

How to explain to children that God's correction is out of love?+

Tell them that God corrects the way a good father corrects his child: not to hurt, but to teach. When parents reprimand, it is not to upset them, but so that the child learns to obey and grows in wisdom. God allows difficult situations to make us turn our hearts back to Him, because He truly loves us.
